GEF Student Advisory Committee: Selection Process, 2021-22

In Winter 2021-22 we sought  nominations from GHS staff of students who:

  • Have thoughts and ideas about education and what it should/could be

  • Show leadership potential, though prior student leadership experience is not required

  • Demonstrate an interest in working with adults

  • Represent the dynamic, diverse students of the Gloucester Public Schools

Note: academic transcripts were not be reviewed or taken into consideration in our selection of the advisory board. We aren’t looking for the straight-A student, we’re looking for the engaged, creative leader-in-progress.

GHS staff nominations were due by January 5, 2022.

The 23 nominated students were then contacted by GEF and invited to apply. Here is the student application. In addition to requesting basic information about skills and interests, the application asked students to respond to one of the following prompts, either in writing or by submitting a video:

  • What is something special that has happened in your education? What made it special? Would you want to replicate that for other students? How might you do that?

  • At any time, a lot of different learning in lots of different ways is happening in the Gloucester Public Schools. If you had the chance to create a program within the schools to enrich learning, what would you create? What would you like to see happening?

  • Tell us about a time where you felt impacted by someone in school. It could be a teacher, a custodian, a friend, etc. How did that person influence you at the time? How did they influence you going forward?

Student applications were due January 15, 2022. Of the 14 who applied, six students were selected after a rigorous review of applications and an interview, in February 2022. Read about them here!

Selected students who complete the school year and fulfill our expectations for the role will receive a $300 stipend. Our hope is that some or all of them will stay on during the 2022-23 school year.
